The Value of Education
Why choose Hope for Hyndman Charter School (HHCS)? We are so glad you asked. We provide a free, community-oriented, public K-12 school that supports every child in our community. From Hyndman, Bedford County, The Wills Mountain Valley and our other surrounding areas, we prepare our next generations for bright futures because we value education.
A Free, Community School for K-12
The value of education cannot be overstated. Every child can learn and contribute positively to society and to their own life. Having an education expands career opportunities, helps people recognize their belief system and what is right and wrong, and education boosts confidence in every aspect of life. Our students learn about strong character, how to become and stay healthy, and how to care for and about the environment.
We mirror this learning value system as we educate and elevate our K-12 students at our small, safe, tuition-free school. We:
Provide education for every student as a whole person
Design individualized instruction based on passions, interests, and needs
Encourage support and participation from local businesses and community members to help keep us all interconnected and thriving together
We are a community school because we care deeply about our community, we partner with our community members and we want to create the next generation of adults and productive society members -- who will be the stewards of our Hyndman community going forward. We are a charter school because charter schools are different from traditional public schools. Here’s how:
Choosing a charter school means smaller classes.
We are a community school. Our smaller classes allow us to know every student and their families, to curb bullying of any kind, and to ably support individualized learning. Our dedicated teachers care deeply for every student and engage 1:1 with each unique learner in their class.
Charter schools can innovate and support different learning opportunities.
At HHCS, we extend the conventional K-12 classroom teaching and learning boundaries by including varied educational endeavors, employing multiple mediums and locations, and modeling and promoting lifelong learning. This includes our work experience program, vocational tech partnership, dual enrollment courses, and online classes.
Charter schools strive to know each student as an individual and can support them holistically -- including the intellectual, physical, and social development of every one of our HHCS K-12 students.
At HHCS, we recognize that each child is unique, creative and able to succeed. It’s our job to find the ways every student learns, and to find the spark that ignites their curiosity and academic passions; and we celebrate every academic developmental milestone together.
We level our students so every student is learning based on their mastery and ability -- not just their age. We keep our students together as assigned by grade, but they may join a different classroom for electives and core subjects based on their learning needs and competencies. This is personalized learning.
Charter schools can adapt quickly to crises and keep our community safe -- on the individual and group level.
HHCS has moved fast to keep our students learning during the COVID 19 pandemic and when Hurricane Ida struck. We are more than a shelter from a storm. We are also a place of celebrations and growth; we share in the good times, too. Our after school clubs and athletics are opportunities for leadership, collaboration and fun.
Our Hornets enjoy baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, tennis, basketball, wrestling and cheer. Our clubs include National Honor Society, Yearbook Committee, Marching band, Student Council, flag girls, Squiz and more.
Charter schools offer inclusive school cultures and safe spaces to be seen and heard for who you are.
At HHCS, our school culture is engaging and welcoming to all in our community. We respect every member of our school community, expect that same level of caring respect in return, and strive to meet the individual needs of all our children in a caring and creative educational environment.
Charter schools are fun.
We celebrate Earth Day and our very own Fun Day, and dedicate whole weeks to Random Acts of Kindness, Read Across America, and school spirit. We enjoy book fairs, pie sales, senior field trips, and give back to our community via blood drives and crafts we create for seniors.
Charter schools embrace and prepare students for secondary education and exciting, sustainable careers of their choosing.
Our dual enrollment with Allegheny College of Maryland is very popular with our upperclassmen with some students’ earning as many as 30 credits!
We also partner with voc tech programs so our students can learn about the culinary arts, welding and diesel systems, and medical and cosmetology fields. We also offer credits for work experience with a robust program that includes interviewing skills and regular evaluations from bosses.
The Value of Education
